A concrete driveway done right will last 30 years or more with minimal maintenance. Done wrong — wrong PSI, wrong thickness, poor base prep — and you're looking at cracking, settling, and costly repairs within a few years. Here's what contractors and homeowners in the Charlotte area need to know before they order.

Choose the Right PSI

For a standard residential driveway with passenger vehicles, 3,000 PSI is the minimum. If you park trucks, RVs, or heavy equipment on your driveway, step up to 3,500–4,000 PSI. The extra cost per yard is small compared to the cost of a driveway that cracks under load.

  • 3,500 PSI — heavier vehicles, delivery trucks, occasional heavy loads
  • 4,000 PSI — RVs, heavy equipment, commercial-adjacent driveways

Thickness Matters More Than You Think

4 inches is the residential standard for driveways. But if you're in an area with expansive clay soils (common in the Charlotte metro), or if heavy vehicles will use the driveway, 5–6 inches is worth the extra material cost. Thicker concrete distributes load better and resists cracking from subgrade movement.

Base Preparation is Everything

Concrete is only as good as what's underneath it. A properly compacted gravel base (4–6 inches of compacted #57 stone or crusher run) prevents settling and gives water somewhere to drain. Skipping base prep is the number one cause of driveway failure — no amount of thick concrete or high PSI compensates for a soft, uneven subgrade.

Calculating How Much Concrete to Order

Measure your driveway length and width in feet, then multiply by your depth in feet (4 inches = 0.33 ft, 6 inches = 0.5 ft). Divide by 27 to get cubic yards.

Example: A 50 ft × 12 ft driveway at 4 inches thick = 50 × 12 × 0.33 ÷ 27 = 7.3 cubic yards. Order 8 yards to account for subgrade variation and waste.

Ground is never perfectly flat. Low spots, soft areas, and edges that need extra fill all consume more concrete than your calculation predicts. Always add 5–10% overage. Running short mid-pour creates a cold joint — a visible seam where fresh concrete meets partially set concrete — which is a structural weak point and an eyesore.

Reinforcement Options

  • Wire mesh (6×6 WWF): standard for residential driveways, controls cracking
  • #3 or #4 rebar on 18-inch grid: stronger, better for heavy-use driveways
  • Synthetic fiber in the mix: reduces plastic shrinkage cracking, good add-on to either option

Control Joints

Concrete shrinks as it cures. Control joints — saw cuts or tooled grooves placed every 8–10 feet — give the concrete a place to crack in a straight, controlled line rather than randomly across the surface. Don't skip them.

Curing and Sealing

Keep the slab moist for at least 7 days after the pour — use a curing compound or wet burlap. Wait 28 days before sealing. A quality penetrating sealer applied every 2–3 years will protect your driveway from moisture, deicing salts, and staining for decades.
